Chapter 2

 UNKNOWN MALWARE DETECTED: BEGIN PROTOCOL

Several lights flickered on, revealing a room full of repair supplies, engineering equipment, and one large table with the inflated body of a heavy weapons, however he had exposed mechanical body parts and internal units. This was the body of Kojack, two weeks after the end of The Grey Depression. An old engineer in brown clothing tinkered away at the android's arm, removing the extra bits added by the legionnaires during war times, and after parting the excess muscle from the actual metal leg he gripped a handful of flesh-like substance from a nearby bucket and molded it over the hand and biceps of the detached body part, creating a skin over it. He placed the arm back in it's the socket, he then turned on his welder and began to re-attach the arm to the body.

The old man grabbed a bottle set on the table next to him and fell back into his chair, letting a sigh out as he pulled the bottle to his mouth for a drink. He was displeased when he found nothing and started to get up, when a hand extended, holding another bottle of the beverage. The old engineer was surprised and looked around before taking the bottle from the young lady's hand.

"What are you doing here?" he asked her "It's quite late, the others must be asleep."

She nodded, "I know Mr. Field" she started to explain, before the old man interrupted "Please, call me Garfield.".

"Garfield." she said "I was just wondering how he was doing, since I was a member of the legionnaires when they did...This... to him."

Garfield placed his bottle on the table and raised himself from his chair, standing to take a better look at his robotic son lying on the table.

"He'll be fine." he muttered "I'm sure he doesn't blame you, times were harsh during the war." he added as he leaned over the android's open breastplate. "Who are you though, I don't believe we've met?" he asked, turning around to face the young lady behind him.

"I'm Sallie, Sallie Rambo." she stated, stretching her hand forwards.

"Garfield, Garfield DeLeanore Field." the old engineer said, using his robotic hand to accept the handshake. "It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am."

An egg timer went off next to Garfield, this caught his attention and he turned to the table, reaching for an odd green device. "I hate to ask, but do you mind helping me a bit Ms. Rambo?" he asked. Sallie nodded and came to the side of the table. The old engineer pulled back a plunger on the back of the green syringe, this showed the empty vial and sticker that read "Nuclear" on it.

'Hold him still." Garfield said as he reached the syringe into the android's chest. Sallie turned and placed her hands on the android's torso, holding him in place. The engineer placed the syringe in the left side of the robot's chest, then slammed the plunger down into it before slowly pulling it back up, the syringe was now filled with green liquid. He chuckled with glee as he set the green-filled syringe down and dug around in his backpack, taking out a syringe filled with blue-liquid, but the same labeling. The syringe was placed above the android's chest and the plunger was pulled back, but held in place by clamps attached to the table.

"If everything is right..." Garfield began to mutter, what he babbled started running together, "...Then by my calculations...", he closed the android's breastplate and slammed the plunger of the blue vial into the android's chest. The androids legs shook, but Sallie had held them down, so they weren't going anywhere. The old man smiled, dusting himself off, and turned his gaze to Sallie.

"Thank you for your help Ms. Rambo." he said, "If everything that I did went as well as it did the first time, he should wake up tomorrow."

"Please Garfield, call me Sallie." she said, giving the old engineer a good chuckle. "I'm glad to have helped."

Garfield took his drink and eased back into his chair, resting his head against the back of it. He took a mouthful of his beverage before leaning forward, setting his bottle on the floor.

"Three of my kids like this, all of them in different places." Garfield said, "Never gets old seeing them though, especially Splinter and Kojack, always something new with those two."

The old engineer laughed, picking up his bottle and looking over at Sallie. "I saw you at the showdown, when the extent of mutation Kojack was in drove him to beat 841X6." he said, "You seemed to have made up for your mistakes with the legionnaires, considering the way the other resistance members welcomed you." He then slid a chair from his left, moving it towards Sallie, motioning for her to sit. "Come, sit down a while." Garfield said.

Sallie walked over to the chair and took a seat, looking at the table full of mechanical equipment and feeling at home in it's mechanical embrace, "I've always admired this kind of machinery." she said while taking a look at the toolbox sat wide open on the table, it's insides strewn about the table used for their various tasks, "Although...I've always wondered how if Kojack's a robot, how does he act like us?" Garfield was puzzled for a moment, however, he eventually processed it in his old mind, "it's a special invention of mine, it doesn't have the most imaginative name, but, I deemed it fitting." he said, "I call it, a Personality Chip."

"But what does it do exactly?" Sallie asked.

"Well," Garfield started, as reached over the table towards Kojack's head to press his palm against his son's forehead, "I had a lot of work to do, especially with the limited technology at that time, but by taking the side binary from a computer, combining that with photographs, information, definitions, and anything I could find at the time; I built a life inside a microchip." He scratched his beard a moment before taking his hand off Kojack's forehead, placing it into his pocket and pulling out a small black box, "You've reminded me of this just now, but this is his back-up, I need to get the information off it now while he's not awake." he said as he opened up the small box and placed it on the table, then reaching over to the android's head, carefully loosening the top and revealing the inner machine. He removed the small microchip from the black case and placed it in the second port, underneath an already full port, waiting a few seconds before taking it back out and placing it back inside the black box, "I probably would've forgotten if it wasn't for our little chat, thank you again Sallie." he said, smiling from under his thick beard.

Sallie smiled back at the engineer, "No worries Garfield." she said kindly.

"Well, I haven't finished answering your question yet, I suppose you deserve something for all the help you've been." Garfield said, resting back in his chair with his drink in his metal hand.
